Through the Nile Humanitarian Aid Foundation’s well drilling project in Uganda, we are working to bring people hope and health. As the Uganda Nile Humanitarian Development Agency, we are leading the effort to improve the lives of rural communities across Uganda. With the support of our donors, we are turning a healthier future into something real.
THE WATER CRISIS IN UGANDA
In Uganda, 24 million people have no access to clean, safe drinking water. Groundwater is fed mainly by rainwater seeping into the soil, and that potential can be brought to the surface with pumps and wells. Without groundwater, life becomes very hard indeed.
People in rural areas usually draw their drinking water from surface sources: ponds, rivers and lakes. More often than not these are also watering places for livestock, catchments collecting waste running downhill from latrines, and basins filled with debris from landslides. They carry dangerous contaminants that can cause life threatening illnesses such as diarrhoea, cholera, dysentery, diphtheria, typhoid and hepatitis.
More than 70 per cent of all illnesses treated in Uganda are caused directly by a lack of clean water or by inadequate sanitation and hygiene. Worldwide, this costs 3.4 million lives every year, and 43 per cent of those deaths are children under five.
Finding groundwater, protecting it and using it sustainably matters for survival, for adapting to a changing climate and for meeting the need for water, and our donors make that work possible. Thank you for helping to answer the need of people who have no clean drinking water and who live face to face with death because of it.
Doing good means giving without expecting anything back: sharing what you have, what you know, your affection and your compassion, with no thought of earthly return. With our donors’ support you can be a light for the hopes of people in need. May God reward you for the good you have done and the good you are still to do.
Greetings from Uganda…
